WHITE OVER WHITE WINTER Collage Post Cards - Postmark by January 18th

by hhc

Now that Winter is here, some in various parts of the country will be dealing with a lot of white, cold precipitation.   Terms like "Storms,""Blizzards," "Squalls," "Ice Storms" and "White-Out" or "Lake Effect" will often be heard over the next few months.

by hhc
So let's make up some POST CARDS to exchange using various white materials.  You can use off-white, bright white, etc. over white backgrounds to put together your art-to-swap.

by hhc
To define your design, add texture. Folding, weaving or tearing papers is one way to add texture.  Paper cut-out's or punched-out shapes is another idea.  Magic Mesh, netting, texture paste, thick paint, ink, gauze, tissue paper, string, lace, doilies, etc. are other possibilities.

Keep it low-profile and not too thick if possible, (None of these exmples are exactly "low profile...") or your postcards may require extra postage to be sent out.

INTERNATIONAL SWAPPERS -
PRIOR TO PARTICIPATING, please contact the Blogsite Administrator regarding using PayPal to cover return mailing postage, or make other arrangements. Also consider delivery delays through the postal system(s).  If your art doesn't arrive in time, and the swap host doesn't know ahead of time to wait for it, you will not be able to participate.

GROUP SWAP DETAILS:
  • You may send in as many as four cards unless specified by the swap host.  (You will get back the same number you send, each from a different artist)
  • Your cards will be mailed to your host in an envelope, and your host will mail them "naked" to other swappers.  International swappers may request to have them all mailed together in one envelope.
  • If you're sending more than one, please make sure you insert waxed paper, parchment or cellophane between the cards so they don't get stuck together in the envelope, especially if you use glue, paint or sealant
  • Write “MMSA - WHITE OVER WHITE " on the back of each card and attach your return address in the UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER in case of postal delivery problems.  An email address legibly written would make it easier for your recipient to thank you.
  • LEAVE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE POSTCARD BLANK (THE PART WHERE THE ADDRESS "TO" GOES)
  • Include a mailing label with your name and address for each card you create
(Your host will attach them to the cards she mails back to you)

  •  Please include the proper postage in the envelope or adhere stamps to your postcards (see below for postal guidelines)
  • Postcards made from thicker cardboard (therefore stiff/not easily bendable)  will need nonmachinable postage.  Thank you.
Postage and Card Size
  • In order to use the postcard rate ($.35) your card cannot be bigger than 6"
x  4+1/4", and it must be thin and flexible.  A card that is larger, thick, lumpy or doesn't bend, will require more postage.
  • If your card is an unusual shape (square, round) or is flexible but has some lumpy embellishments it will probably cost you the "nonmachinable" rate of $.70
  • If your card doesn't bend at all, the post office may consider it a package and you should go get it weighed and measured to figure out the proper postage.
INTERNATIONAL SWAPPERS - contact the swap host regarding using PayPal to cover return mailing postage, or make other arrangements.

Thinking Outside The Box - Post Card Swap - Postmark by January 25th

by hhc - Collage

Over the past two months I received similar comments in swap mailings from three different participants:  "I'm thinking outside the box."

This seemed significant because I had previously been considering putting together a group swap theme called "Thinking Outside The Box."  So, taking that as a sign, here it is.

The term "Thinking Outside The Box" may mean to think in a different way- creatively, prompted by a new perspective, or unconventionally.  As artists this should be easy, as we often "see" things differently than others do.

So, you could take the theme figuratively, like trying something unfamiliar or challenging, or, you could illustrate it literally (as in the image at the top of this description).

The example below used a horizontal stripe made by acrylic paint on Deli Wax Paper (Gelli Plate Printing) as an abstract bridge in the sky, complete with spectators.
