ZANY ZENTANGLES - Post Card Swap - Postmark by October 7th

by Beau Sinkler
Your host for this swap, Beau, is extending an invitation to beginners and experienced Zentangles designers alike to create 1 - 4 post cards to exchange with other artists.  Zentangles are an exercise in creativity and focus, often created in black-on-white, although adding colors is certainly a lovely option.  There are many, many examples on Pinterest and Google to inspire.   MMSA had a  previous Zentangles swap in March - May of 2014.

The sample below was an ambitious endeavor started some years ago... It illustrates the concept of drawing outlines, then filling in areas with a variety of repeating patterns.  Beau suggests using pencil to draw your outlines.

UFO by Honi C.
Some simple filler shapes could be stripes, spirals, dots, diamonds,
circles, triangles, squares, zig-zags, checkerboards, etc.

For example, you could repeat leaf shapes inside an area, or draw stripes and fill in every other one with black or colored pens or pencils.  Sometimes the spaces make the designs, other times the drawings do. Simple patterns are just as effective as elaborate ones.

SWAPPING GUIDELINES:
  • You may send in as many as four cards unless specified by the swap host.  (You will receive the same number you send, each from a different artist).
  • Write “MMSA - ZENTANGLES" on the back of each card and attach your return address in the UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER in case of postal delivery problems.  If  you will include an email address legibly written, your recipient will find it easier to acknowledge receipt of your wonderful art, and to thank you.
  • Your cards should be mailed to your host in an envelope/  Your swap host will mail them as-is to other swappers.  International swappers may request to have them all mailed together in one envelope.
  • If you're sending more than one, please insert waxed paper, parchment or cellophane between the cards so they don't get stuck together in the envelope, especially if you use glue, paint or sealant.
  • LEAVE SPACE FOR THE "ADDRESS TO" LABELS PARTICIPANTS SEND IN FOR THE SWAP HOST TO ATTACH

  • Include a mailing label with your name and address for each card you expect to receive back.
(Your host will attach them to the swapped cards she mails to you)
  •  Please enclose the proper postage in the envelope (see below for postal guidelines)
  • Postcards made from thicker cardboard (therefore stiff/not easily bendable)  will need nonmachinable postage.  Thank you.
POSTAGE AND CARD SIZE
  • In order to use the postcard rate ($.35) your card cannot be bigger than 6"
x  4+1/4", and it must be thin and flexible.  A card that is larger, thick, lumpy or doesn't bend, will require more postage.
  • If your card is an unusual shape (square, round) or is flexible but has some lumpy embellishments it will probably cost you the "nonmachinable" rate of $.70
  • If your card is very thick, heavy and doesn't bend at all, the post office may consider it a package and you should get it weighed and measured at a postal counter to figure out the proper postage.
INTERNATIONAL SWAPPERS - contact the swap host regarding using PayPal to cover return mailing postage, or make other arrangements.

MATCHBOX DELIGHT - Altered/Decorated Mini-Matchboxes Swap - Postmark by September 30th

by Beau Sinkler

Hello Swappers,
How is your summer going?  Too fast for some, too slow for others...

It seems that we have not yet had an Altered/Decorated Mini-Matchboxes swap.  You can gather inspiration from so many examples on Pinterest and other sites.

by Beau Sinkler
For this swap, participants will empty 1 - 4 mini-matchboxes of their wooden matches *, decorate the outside, then decorate the insides.  Perhaps enclose bits of art or little  trinkets and treasures.  Make a scene.

The push-out "drawer" could have a drawer pull made from a button, a brass paper fastener, a string with a charm, bead or beads, etc.

Or you could raise the matchbox up a little by gluing half-round wooden or plastic pieces underneath, like glides under a sofa/davenport/couch.

Outside wrap could be hand-decorated paper, newspaper, tissue paper, fabric, lace, security envelope liner, etc.
by Beau Sinkler

More idea-starters:  a shrine, a Christmas scene, pop-up's, a treasure box, a fold-out story or letter...

by Beau Sinkler

5-packs or 10-packs of these small matchboxes (One brand is Diamond.) are usually available in the picnic supplies aisle at a grocery store, although some dollar stores or hardware stores may carry them.
*CAUTION:  the wooden matches must be removed before mailing through the postal system.  If you decide to use the matches as part of the design or enclosures, you MUST burn the matchstick head first.  It can be quickly doused in water afterward, then dried and painted, glued, dabbed with nail polish, covered with tiny beads, etc.

(Transform a match into a magic wand? hmmmmm)
A few more ideas:
doll house accessories
charms, sequins, beads
junk jewelry
vintage keys
scrapbooking findings
ephemera
fishing lures
small pieces of artwork
a tiny doll in a bed (mini-blanket and mini-pillow)
fake bugs
a mini-garden of paper or silk flowers
a desert scene
seashells, tiny smooth pebbles
foreign postage stamps
etc.

Mailing:  I recommend wrapping your bulky matchbox art in bubble wrap, or if flat, put it in a flat jewelry box (check out dollar stores for inexpensive boxes) and then send it in,  protected by a padded envelope.

THEME:  Altered/Decorated Mini-Matchboxes
MEDIA:  Collage, paint, fabric, etc.
TECHNIQUE:  Remove matches, cover matchbox, enclose small items inside drawer
PACKAGING:  You may want to use tissue paper or bubble wrap to protect your wonderful art through the mail
SIZE PARAMETERS:  1+1/2" x  2+1/4"  x  1/4 " deep
ENCLOSURES CHECKLIST:
  • SELF-ADDRESS MAILING LABEL
  • SEVEN NON-MACHINABLE POSTAGE STAMPS or $5.00 cash for your return mail (for which I will provide the new padded mailer)
  • I highly recommend wrapping each matchbox in plastic  wrap or waxed paper, a small storage bag, or at least rubber band it shut so any loose contents don't fall out during mailing.
Put your Altered Mini-Matchboxes in a padded
mailer envelope, mark as NONMACHINABLE,
postmark by September 30th and send

TO:
Honi C
PO Box 142
Freedom, NY  14065
