ABOUT 3 OR 3 1/2 YEARS AGO, BY CHANCE I CAME ACROSS iHANNA AND HER POSTCARD SWAP. HAD NEVER HEARD OF HER, OF POSTCARD SWAPS AND CERTAINLY NEVER HEARD OF MAIL ART!!! SO I DID THE SWAP AND THEN WAS ANXIOUS FOR MORE. TRIED TO FIND SOMETHING ON LINE, BUT DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE AS TO WHAT TO LOOK FOR...AND I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING THAT SEEMED APPROPRIATE. SIX MONTHS LATER iHANNA'S SWAP CAME AROUND AGAIN. A REGULAR MMSA SWAPPER GOT ONE OF MY CARDS OR MAYBE I GOT ONE OF HERS. SHE SUGGESTED I MIGHT LIKE MMSA. AND I DID!! THANK YOU, NANCY IN FLORIDA!!
I sent my first postcard to MMSA about three years ago now, but I don't remember how I came across the site. What I do remember is looking at the site off and on for at least a year before I got the courage to try making a card...or three or four...and sending them in. The cards I saw posted here were so gorgeous, and I felt like my own attempts at art were pathetic. And then, quite frankly, I finally saw some that, well, were on the same level as mine were, and it didn't matter, because they were cute and I liked them. So I took the chance, and the rest is history!
I have three mail art goals for 2017, and have already blown the first one: I will not wait until the very last minute to make cards. oops. I will get my cards in the mail on time. I will make more of the themes this year, to try to get out of my comfort zone. So, we'll see how well that goes, lol.
It's impossible to pick the most memorable piece of mail art I've received, and don't think I would if I could: I would hate to name someone's card, and taking a chance on hurting someone else's feelings...or, being as absentminded as I tend to be, naming the wrong name to the wrong card. I will say this, tho: Some of my favorites came from a dear lady who is no longer with us.
MMSA means I'm part of a group, which is a nice feeling. It means that if I want to swap, I need to get my A-game going, and push my own abilities harder than I have in the past. It's a good challenge for me, something that helps me keep focused and mentally alert. At my age that's important.
How has it changed my life? I've met some wonderful people thru swapping, and a few of these have turned into really good friends I've never met, but still feel a strong friendship with. Swapping has also pushed me past limits, improved my abilities, and given me a sense of mild satisfaction with my own art: It's not quite as pathetic as it was, lol!!
Overall, I love MMSA, and hope to be an active part of it for a long time to come. And while I'm typing, I'd like to give a sincere "THANK YOU" to all of you who are willing to host the swaps, and a special one to Honi, for stepping in and taking over for Karen.
Karen, thank you for the years you put into this. I appreciate you.
